Making the Podcast
Podcasting is becoming an increasingly popular way to entertain and educate people on a variety of different topics. Ranging from true crime to politics, sports to comedy, podcasts are favoured for their convenience because listeners can tune in whenever they want, no matter what they’re doing. When creating my project, I wanted to make use of popular education methods and thought that creating my own podcast would be an ideal way of reaching a wider audience.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with this period of history, you might ask, ‘what does agora mean?’. To that I say, ‘that is a very good question!’. The agora was the social hub of ancient Athens. It was a place for public speaking, where merchants sold their produce, and where people met their friends to socialise, amongst other things. Drawing on this, I wanted to create a title that encapsulated the buzz of the heart of ancient Athenian life and eventually came up with the title of Agora Gossip.

In terms of episode length, you might notice that they are a lot shorter than the regular thirty minutes to an hour you might be used to in other podcasts. I decided to make these episodes 'bite-sized', meaning each topic covered is done in a short, snappy way. This means each episode can be listened to on a lunch break, on a quick walk, tidying your room, or whenever suits you best! From past experience, it can be really off-putting learning something for the first time and being given huge amounts of information. Honestly, it can weigh you down a bit and maybe even deter you from wanting to find out more. So, I wanted to draw on this and create a short podcast so listeners can still learn about key parts of ancient Athenian life, but not have to sit for hours. Granted, this shorter podcast style means not everything can be included, but I would prefer to create more episodes that people will listen to rather than one big one that makes people switch off after 10 minutes!
